Skout, a popular app that allows people to flirt virtually with one another, has suspended its service for teens after three predators used the service to sexually assault underage victims. The victims—two girls ages 12 and 15, and one 13-year-old boy—were all assaulted by strangers masquerading as teens. Assailants found ways to circumvent the safety measures Skout had rolled out for its teen version. After hearing of the assaults, Skout shut down the service without warning. “We would ban all users from Skout if we had to, if we felt their safety was at risk, and we wouldn’t wait to do it,” says Founder Christian Wiklund. About 15 million people have downloaded Skout, using it to send 500 million messages a month. About 15 percent of its users had been teens between the ages of 13 and 17. (Wall Street Journal)
