“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
Every youth ministry has a beginning. It could begin with a call—or a hire. It could begin with a vision. It also could also begin when a person’s faith is bound to following Jesus and the desire to serve Him.

Beginnings are important because they set the stage—some might say, a foundation—for all that is to follow. It is also important for every youth leader to consider the beginning of ministry, as Jesus noted that many begin a work but are unable to complete it. Faith is required to make any ministry sing with the joy and presence of God. Our own efforts are never enough.

The beginning of the gospel actually begins with a word—a word that birthed the universe, our world, and all creation. It was a word that later would be enfleshed (incarnated). It was a word that would make all things possible and is the very nature of grace.

As you consider the culmination of an old year and the promises of the new, take a few moments this week to reflect upon your beginnings in ministry. What still excites you about this call to serve teenagers and families? What is it that still makes your heart sing with joy and fills your efforts with meaning? Can you still relate to this first word, this first work, and are you still embracing that faith in God?

Take a moment to give thanks for these gifts and to make your beginning fresh. A new year is only days away, but you can continue the old work and make strides to see ministry from fresh perspectives and with new eyes.
