More than three-fourths of teens “better understand the challenges of pregnancy and parenting” thanks to MTV programs such as Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant, according to a survey by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. Some believe such shows may be one reason teen pregnancy rates have fallen in the past few years—down to a record low of 34.3 births per 1,000 teens in 2010. The remainder—23 percent—say the shows make pregnancy seem “easy,” and about half of parents believe the shows oversimplify pregnancy and parenthood.
