Arizona is contemplating becoming the country’s sixth state to introduce Bible-centric electives for high schoolers. The impetus for the law is the massive impact the Bible has had on literature and Western culture for the millennia. While there’s nothing on the books now that would prohibit teachers from using the Bible (or any other religious text) in class, many are afraid to touch it. Rep. Terri Proud (R-Tucson) says his bill would allow the Bible to enter the classroom, albeit in “a very restricted way.” “There are people out there who hate the Bible and everything about it,” Proud says. “That’s fine, but don’t deprive our children of biblical literature because of your personal feelings.” (The Arizona Republic)
