America: Land of the free and home of the high? Pretty much, according to a new survey published in PLoS Medicine. According to the survey, 42 percent of U.S. residents have tried marijuana at least once. That’s more—far more, in most cases—than the citizens of any of the other 16 countries surveyed. In the Netherlands, where pot is, essentially, legal, only 20 percent of residents have tried the stuff.

About 16 percent of Americans have tried cocaine, also a rate far higher than anywhere else surveyed—including Columbia, where most of the white stuff is manufactured. Experts also found about 20 percent of Americans had tried marijuana and 3 percent had tried cocaine by age 15.
