Almost 80 percent of teens try alcohol before they turn 18, according to new research published in the Archives of General Psychiatry—with 10 percent drinking regularly by 13 or 14. Researchers also found that 16 percent of teens already were abusing drugs by age 18. This is particularly worrisome for experts: The earlier in life users start using, the more difficult it is to shake the habit later. “There’s really a type of rewiring that goes on with continued use that can result in an increased interest in using and an inability to stop using,” says Susan Foster, of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.
