On Nov. 9, 17-year-old Jenni Lake gave birth to a healthy baby boy whom she named Chad. Twelve days later, she died from cancer. Months earlier, when the girl discovered she was pregnant, doctors gave her a sobering choice: If she continued with her cancer treatments, she’d have to abort the baby. Instead, Jenni chose to carry the baby to term, forgoing her best chance at surviving the brain cancer she’d been battling for months. As she was being admitted into the hospital, she told a nurse, “I’m done, I did what I was supposed to. My baby is going to get here safe.” The baby will be raised by his father, Nathan, with help from both families. (Time)
