Let’s face it: Bad school lunches are as much a part of the educational landscape as math, recess and making fun of the teacher. However, in Argyll, Scotland, there was one 9-year-old girl who decided to do something about it. Martha Payne launched a blog called NeverSeconds, which featured almost daily pictures of her school lunches. Her online musings quickly took off, and before long readers were sending her pictures of their lunches for comparison. Advocates for healthier, tastier lunches saw Martha as a heroic figurehead. In the process, her blog helped raise $40,000 for an international organization called Mary’s Meals, which helps bring healthy food into underprivileged schools. When her blog started making headlines, the town’s council (not the school) forbade Martha from posting pictures of her lunches on the blog anymore; but after Martha posted what was to be her last entry (titled “Goodbye”) on June 14, a massive backlash encouraged the Argyll and Bute Council to reconsider its stance on Martha’s lunchtime pictures. The council’s head, Roddy McCuish, also announced there will be a “School Meals Summit” this summer. (Salon.com)
