About 8,000 new high school graduates in Maryland received diplomas that announced proudly the recipient had completed “an approved progam of study.” Alas, the word program typically has an “R” after the “G.” The embarrassed school district, which had paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,750 for the diplomas and another $6,587.50 for shipping and other costs, has since apologized; and the printing company announced it will cover the fee for reprints. Graduates will receive new diplomas—with the word program spelled correctly this time—in the mail. “I think that overall, our students understand mistakes happen and we have taken the necessary steps to ensure this won’t happen again,” said Briant Coleman, spokesman for the district.
