Nearly one out of five female college students at an unnamed university said someone attempted to rape them during their freshman year.

Of the 18.6 percent of women who reported an attempted rape, more than three-quarters said someone tried to have sex with them when they were incapacitated in some way. Kate Carey, a professor at Brown University and the study’s lead author, isn’t surprised: Women tend to be at greater risk for sexual assault during their freshman year, in part because of the increased availability of alcohol and drugs.

“We’re starting to appreciate that the whole of freshman year is probably a risky time for students,” she told Bloomberg Business. “If we (were) to see these types of rates for a broken leg or some other kind of injury, we’d certainly expect the environment and the individuals involved would be addressed.” (USA Today)
