There are words we just don’t use in public, words so racially charged that just uttering them could start a fight and label the user a racist, homophobe or worse—unless the word is used online. That seems to be OK, according to youth. According to a new poll by the Associated Press and MTV, 54 percent of teens and 20-somethings between the ages of 14 and 24 believe it’s OK to use vulgar slurs online with their friends. Their reasoning? Everyone knows they don’t mean it. About 71 percent said such language is more commonly used on the Internet than in real life, and more than half say they’ve seen such words used on social networking sites. (Slate)
