We’ve heard a lot about sexting—sending sexually explicit messages or photos via cellphone—among teens lately. In truth, adults—even adults old enough to have teens themselves—are much more likely to engage in sexting than adolescents. According to new research by Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, about 15 percent of teens have received nude or suggestive photos of someone they know via cellphone, and 4 percent admit to having sent such photos. Those figures are alarming, but young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 are far more likely to send (13 percent) or receive (33 percent) sexually explicit photos. Even older adults are slightly more likely to sext: About 17 percent of folks ages 30 to 49 have received risqué photos, and 5 percent say they’ve sent them. “I think we tend to blame teenagers for behaviors that we’re quite guilty of ourselves,” said Nancy Baym, a University of Kansas professor of communication studies. “Grownups are certainly capable of doing really stupid stuff online.” (New York Times)
