An artificial intelligence researcher says that humans and robots could be an intimate part of our lives in the next few decades–with an emphasis on intimate.

“My forecast is that around 2050, the state of Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize marriages with robots,” said David Levy, a researcher at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands.

Don’t laugh–he’s mostly serious. In his thesis, “Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners,” Levy argues that, as robots become more and more humanlike in their appearance, people could start falling in love and marrying them.

“It may wound a little weird, but it isn’t,” Levy said. “Love and sex with robots are inevitable.” (LiveScience)
