About five years ago, Linda and Joe Cramer of Medford, Ore., came up with a way to let their three children, now ages 9, 12 and 14, make a contribution each year to World Vision.

The family started eating one inexpensive dinner a week, such as beans and rice (dried beans that have soaked and cooked) or baked potatoes. Every week, they put the $7 or $8 they save on that meal in a jar that the children had decorated.

And at the end of every year, the family has put aside more than $300, and the kids choose what they’ll order from the World Vision catalog.
