High schools, hoping to curb their students’ propensity to drink at extracurricular events, are snatching up breathalyzers in record numbers. One manufacturer reports that high school orders for its product have shot up 120 percent in each of the last four years.

“We get a lot of orders from principals before proms,” said Charles Lee of AK Solutions USA. While many students and civil–liberty proponents aren’t big fans of the trend, schools say it’s a pretty economical way to keep kids in line and safe on the roads these days: Each device is about the size of a cell phone and can cost as little as $80.
