Redeeming Singleness: How the Storyline of Scripture Affirms the Single Life
Barry Danylak (Foreword by John Piper)
Crossway, 2010, 256 pp., $16.99, Crossway.org

Singleness is an oft-neglected topic in the church. In this book, Danylak abandons opinion-based teaching in pursuit of Bible-based truth. In so doing, he presents the single life as a biblical portrayal of the all-satisfying glory of Christ’s redemption.

If you want a quick, practical primer on singleness, this isn’t your book. Danylak’s study is rich and deep, beginning in creation, examining the books of the prophets, exploring Jesus’ teachings and ending in Paul’s writings. His approach is scholarly, yet his style is enjoyable. In the Paul chapter for example, during the course of several engaging pages he explains the interpretational context of 1 Corinthians 7:1. Because of Danylak’s clear explanation and humble use of vocabulary, this discussion feeds where it otherwise may have frustrated.

This book grows the mind, stirs the soul and makes much of God’s purposes of singleness. I highly recommend it.
