Money and time are the biggest factors keeping kids out of camp, especially in an age of rampant travel sports and extracurricular demands. “They probably have a travel Backgammon team at this point,” one leader says.

He counteracts by announcing summer camp dates a full year in advance. “Our senior pastor gets up a couple times a year and says to parents, ‘This is an important thing for kids, and we need you to help us scholarship some kids to camp. Will you help us with that? Will you make this a priority in your kid’s life?'”

The consistency of camp every summer also builds momentum and excitement among the kids. Early planning makes it easier to reserve your dates of choice with your camp of choice.
