He first appeared in 1963 in Marvel Comics’ Tales of Suspense. The 2008 movie starring Robert Downey grossed more than half a billion dollars worldwide. The new Iron Man movie opens this weekend. Do your kids have Iron Man fever?

There’s much about the Iron Man story line that kids find absorbing: Anthony Edward “Tony” Stark was is an industrialist playboy and genius engineer who suffered a heart injury when kidnapped by bad guys who wanted him to use his engineering expertise for evil.

Instead he builds a powered suit of armor that saves his life and helps him protect the world. Iron Man also appears in pop culture, from rapper Ghostface Killah (he titled his 1996 debut solo album Ironman) to Beatle Paul McCartney, whose song “Magneto and Titanium Man” was inspired by an Iron Man enemy.

More recently the character of Nathan Stark on the television show “Eureka” is inspired by Tony Stark.
