Are today’s youth slackers? Hardly. Indeed, volunteerism among teens and young adults is surging, and the Internet is playing a huge role in all this activism.

About 83 percent of incoming college students volunteered during their final year of high school—up from 66 percent who did so in 1989. Many are turning to the Internet to organize volunteer efforts, to sign up for them or simply to raise awareness: The social networking site MySpace boasts 22,000 non-profit groups online.

“Activism is at a very high level among college students, probably more than in the last 10 to 20 years,” said Robert Rhoads, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. “There’s a greater political consciousness among students. The Internet has played a role in that.” (USA Today)
