Through engaging personal narratives, movie quotes, and biblical examples, In the Meantime helps readers discover ways to recover the largely lost art of living one’s calling. Moving away from the view of calling as a one-time event and toward opening the reader’s eyes to paradigms of waiting, Brendle says, “The process is the calling,” and “It’s all training, if you’ll let it be.”

Brendle’s narratives and language are primarily geared toward twenty- and thirtysomethings. As a result, this is a resource that would be valuable for personal reflection or to use with a group of leaders in that age range. However, with a little work to recontextualize the material, the guiding concepts could be used with teenagers (especially soon-to-be graduates). In whatever way it is applied, this book offers a necessary counter message to our often-impatient culture.
