Black History Month is observed every February by many educational and civic institutions, including the Library of Congress. Also known as African-American History Month, the occasion gives youth groups a chance to expose students to a different take on race and history.

Some adults don’t think it’s necessary to have a month about Black history, but many educators say it’s a good idea for kids, many of whom don’t know much about the conditions Blacks endured in America for so long or the struggles involved in the Civil Rights Movement.

Perhaps you can plan an event with an African-American member of your church or community. Some groups also do events with other churches or youth groups in the community.

Think of activities you can do on your own, or visit the Library of Congress’s Educational Resources site for tons of ideas.

Other supporting groups include National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
