They say college often is wasted on the young. Now some high schools are encouraging graduating students to take a year off before plunging into another four years of school. Earlier this year, schools in seven metro areas across the country hosted what they called “gap-year fairs” to help youth figure out what to do with their time off. Also, Princeton University has announced a formalized “bridge year” program, which allows students to do service work away from the states before they enroll.
