For thousands of students, the start of the new school term is so traumatic they will become ill. Doctors and psychologists have seen a significant increase in the number of children suffering from “school phobia.” Estimated to affect one in 20 children, experts believe the trend towards bigger schools, and an increase in childhood obesity and bullying, makes the medically recognised condition worse. Also known as “school refusal,” if left untreated, the condition can bring on physical symptoms such as vomiting, headaches, fatigue and panic attacks; furthermore, sufferers run the risk of carrying anxiety phobias into adulthood.

Discussion Starters

1.) Typically in groups, there are a variety of temperaments and personalities represented. How do you ensure all members are involved at their comfort levels and interacting in meaningful ways with other members?
2.) When you find someone is less, or not at all, comfortable connecting with others in traditionally accepted ways, what steps do you take to understand them and help them integrate at a pace with which they are comfortable?
3.) Which biblical passages do you find the most helpful in understanding what others might be experiencing? (See 1 Kings 3:9)
