Many of today’s eco-friendly, go-green, health-conscious (often vegan) adolescents prefer oganic sustenance. Reasons cited include better taste and the perception that organic food is a healthier choice.

Discussion Starters:
1.) Are you, or do you know someone who only eats organic foods? If so, why is this important to you / them? Is this an important way of taking care of your God-given body?
2.) After reading the article and discussing the relationship between the government, certifiers and farmers, do you think there is merit to going organic? Do you think going organic is worth the monetary expenditure? Why or why not?
3.) The modern organic movement began with a group of countercultural agriculturalists who were looking for better methods for producing foods. What do biblical passages, such Genesis 1:29-30; Genesis 2:9; Genesis 6:21; Genesis 9:3 and Leviticus 3:11-34; Leviticus 19:23and Leviticus 25:6-12 indicate about the importance God places on our physical nourishment and the land in which foods are produced?

Consumers are willing to pay more, sometimes half again as much, for an organic option due to the preceived personal benefits, as well as agricultural practices that are thought to be better for the land and environment.

However, does an organic label assure foods are safer? Not necessarily, according to a recent article published in The New York Times.

The recent outbreaks of threats to health, such as the salmonella contamination in peanuts and peanut products, has some shoppers rethinking the organic vs. food safety issue.

Organic, but Safe?
