This summer, we are starting several programs to propel us into the next school year. One of the first things I am doing is starting a bi-weekly study in theology. Yeah, I know, teens and theology supposedly mix like oil and water. Yet, I increasingly discover youth who want to dig deeper into the character and nature of God and the Bible. I hope this small group of students (about 15) will become trained student leaders in the youth group.

Second, we are starting a time of fellowship that’s just a chance to just hang out, have fun and play Ultimate Frisbee every other Tuesday. Our motivation also is for youth to invite their friends to this event to be introduced to group. We know we cannot wait for un-churched youth to find us, so this is an opportunity designed to go them.

Third, we are heading to a summer mission camp in July. From my observation of the youth, particular to my group is that they are comfortable with their faith in church. However, when it comes to sharing their faith, they clam up. My hope is this camp will launch them and set the tone for their school year with students eager to share their faith with others.

Fourth, I am planning a mini-retreat for my youth workers and volunteers in August. I think it is important for leaders to have fun, play, think and dream together as a team. Building team unity this summer will help us stay unified when our lives become more fragmented this summer.

As a whole, my ministry team and I are working toward preparing the youth and ourselves for the next school year. We are stoked about several of these opportunities because we are starting a couple of new things and expecting an awesome time at camp!

Andrew Hayes, youth pastor in Sterling, Colo., has lived and worked all over–California, Montana, North Carolina and Tennessee. He is a graduate of Bryan College in Youth Ministry and is working toward his M.Div. at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Julie, love all things outdoors–but most importantly, they love Jesus and students!!
