In our hypersexualized culture, you’d think teens would be having sex—and having babies—at a record pace. According to new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teens are giving birth less frequently these days than since the government’s been keeping track. According to the CDC, the teen birth rate dropped to 34.3 births per 1,000 girls ages 15 to 19. That’s a 9 percent drop from 2009, when the teen birth rate was 37.9 births per 1,000 girls. “We haven’t seen a one-year decline like this since the mid-1940s,” Stephanie Ventura, a demographer for the CDC and a co-author of the study, told The Wall Street Journal. Moreover, it was the 17th year-over-year drop in the past 19 years. Some of the drop can be attributed to teens staying abstinent longer. Between 2006 and 2010, about 43 percent of teen girls admit to having sex—down from 45.5 percent of girls who said the same in 2002. Teens who are sexually active are also more likely to use birth control. (Wall Street Journal)
