When I was growing up, I was afraid of EVERYTHING. Every time it stormed, I was afraid a tornado was coming. Every time a news story broke about a plane crash, I was afraid to go on our family vacations. Every time I heard about a shooting, I was terrified to come out of my room. This fear of the unknown has become a reality for this generation. Their days are consumed with news story after news story about tragedy and devastation. When I started middle school, my Mom gave me a list of scripture verses that I could look at when I was afraid or fearful of what may happen in the world around me. I began to hide those scriptures in my heart and really allow them to consume my thoughts. What I found is that the peace of God can really calm every fear if we just allow Him to be in control. For our teenagers, hate and wickedness has become a part of normal life. Fear has become routine. We have the opportunity and responsibility to help this generation shape their future. We have a duty to help them understand what it feels like to have “peace that passes all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). Here are some encouraging scriptures to share with your students during times of uncertainty and fear.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.
I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
