Youth Culture Update: Don’t Worry…It Has More Lifeboats Now

An authentic replica of the Titanic is scheduled to take its maiden voyage in 2018—106 years after the original luxury liner hit an iceberg and sank, killing 1,503 people.

Clive Palmer, an Australian tycoon, is behind the new Titanic, which will sail between Jiangsu, China, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (waters relatively free of icebergs). It will look, in most respects, like the original, including Turkish baths, swimming pools and a squash court. It also will sell first-, second- and third-class tickets, just as the original did. Further, it will be about the same size—making it significantly smaller than today’s massive cruise ships. (The Titanic II is a 40,000-ton vehicle; two boats in Royal Caribbean’s line are 225,000 tons.)

There will be a few changes, naturally, including the inclusion of digital navigation, satellite controls and modern evacuations procedures. Also, the ship, unlike its famed predecessor, will have air conditioning. (Fox News)
