Brian Housman
Randall House Publishing, 2014, 152 pp., $17.99
Every parent wonders when to allow certain technology with their children while also trying to manage all the digital noise that bombards them every day. Housman’s Tech-Savvy Parenting is a helpful, one-stop resource of information, tips and statistics to aide every family to take action where it is needed. What is the difference in game ratings? How can I help my children protect their reputations online? How do I understand and dialogue about the lure of pornography? Where do I go to set parent controls on our different devices? How does violence in video games affect my child? Why is cyberbullying so popular, and what do we do about it? All of these and more questions are addressed in a step-by-step fashion to help parents of all levels of tech knowledge and social media usage. Tech-Savvy Parenting equips and gives personal advice to readers based on sobering trends and tested solutions. One consistent drawback from cover to cover is the graphics that seem to resemble magazines from the 1990s. The information is extremely helpful, but it is not presented well for today’s generation of parents—especially concerning when talking about an advancing topic such as technology. By the end of the book, all will agree the practical help and advice of Housman’s work outweighs everything else. I recommend that parents of toddlers to parents of college students give Tech-Savvy Parenting a look.
