Kids are a lot of work, no question. New parents spend a great deal of time taking care of their new bundles of joy; but according to a new study from Ohio State University, they don’t spend as much time as they thought.

Researchers interviewed nearly 400 new moms and dads on how becoming a new parent impacted their workload. According to these interviews, work went up a lot: While most parents said they spent about 60 hours a week on paid and unpaid labor before having kids, their work levels went up to about 90 hours a week after. Mothers said they spent about 28 hours on childcare, while fathers said they devoted about 15 hours to their kids.

Researchers also had these new parents track their time with detailed diaries, and it turns out that moms spend about 15 hours devoted to childcare—a little more than half the time they said they spend—and dads spend just 10 hours. According to the diaries, parents spend more time at work than they thought. (Time)
