Doctors in San Diego have reported the first case of addiction to Google Glass, the company’s high-tech eyewear that was unveiled in 2013 and officially released to the general public earlier this year.

The case involves a 31-year-old man who wore his Glass for up to 18 hours every day, typically only taking the eyewear off when sleeping or showering. He checked into a U.S. Navy substance abuse program because he thought he was having trouble with alcohol, but doctors found that he actually had much more trouble weaning himself from the Glass than from the booze—a notion confirmed by the patient himself.

According to Dr. Andrew Doan, who wrote a paper on the case, said, “When the therapist would ask him a question, he would have this repeated movement of placing his index finger to the right side of face, similar to trying to turn on the Glass.” (NBC News)
