Youth Culture Update: Get Your Motor Putting

By Paul Asay | Freelance writer, Colorado Springs. | April 30 2012
A group of Missouri seventh and eighth graders built a car in their industrial technology class, and while the vehicle may not look like much—its body is made of corrugated plastic, after all—it's awfully impressive at the pump. The single-seat car gets 358 miles per gallon—good enough gas mileage to win the Missouri SuperMileage Challenge against a bevy of much older competitors. The car is powered by a 35cc engine that churns out a whopping 1.3 horsepower, and drivers conserved on gas by implementing a pulse-and-glide method of driving—pushing the engine harder for short bursts and then coasting off the resulting power surge.
