While Apple celebrates
two billion iPhone app downloads, a new campaign from Verizon
Wireless touts Motorola's "Droid" phone as a worthy challenger. The
ads for the Droid, available November, list features the iPhone lacks, ending with the
tagline "Everything iDon't, Droid does." The Droid will run Google's
Android software, a platform for a range of manufacturers, in contrast to the
iPhone's "Apple-only" status. T-Mobile and
Sprint already have Android phones -- but with the addition of Verizon, the largest U.S. carrier, the package becomes more attractive to developers creating applications.
The homepage for the campaign is
droiddoes.com. Of course, the thrust
of the ads don't mean Verizon Wireless wouldn't carry the iPhone; having a
viable alternative to the iPhone could strengthen Verizon's hand in
negotiations with Apple, which currently has an exclusive arrangement with
AT&T. (
