Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent Me, so I am sending you” (John 20:21).

The first words that Jesus spoke to His followers after His resurrection were, “Peace be with you!” This is a powerful word—and an indication of our call in youth ministry. Jesus sends and gives peace—and then He sends us forth to share this same peace with others.

What is peace? How can we share it?

These are important questions in our time, when violence, hatred and genocide seem to have renewed footing. We often struggle to know where to begin to understand, much less to share the peace of Christ.

Christ’s peace is an important beginning point. We must be willing to receive His peace before we can share it. We cannot give what we do not have. We also may begin where we are, sharing this peace among the people with whom we work most closely. Think about it. In our respective youth groups, we have teenagers (perhaps entire families), struggling daily with various forms of hatred and fear. Some may struggle with racism, hold grudges or be bullied daily. These teenagers may be looking for Christ’s peace in their lives.

That’s where we can help. As leaders, we are given the awesome responsibility of sharing God’s peace with others. It may be our word, presence or care that turns the tide for a young person. Many may not have another caring adult in their lives.

How can we be peaceful people this week? How can we share it?
