Introduction: When are times we typically celebrate people’s lives? (birthdays, weddings, births, funerals…) What was one of your most memorable birthdays?

Study
1. Read John 14:6. What is the third thing Jesus says in His “I Am” statement in this verse? (He is the Life.) How would you define life? (Life: a. the property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms; b. the physical, mental and spiritual experiences that constitute existence.) According to this verse, Jesus is Life. He is the One who can distinguish us from the dead. Remember when we studied His resurrection? He conquered death! He also can provide us with a meaningful existence. Do you ever struggle with wondering why you’re here? Who should you ask?

2. Read John 1:1-4. Now, read it again; every place it says or refers to “the Word,” replace with the name of Jesus. Do we truly realize that apart from Christ, nothing would exist? Crazy thought, huh? Life comes from Jesus. We know He created us; He also offers us eternal life.

3. Read John 5:24-26. What do you think the phrase, “crossed over from death to life” means? (The person who believes what Jesus is saying will not be condemned, but instead will experience life.) How long will this life the Lord gives us last? (Forever)

Read Romans 6:23 and explain how it goes along with what you just read in John 5. Not only does Jesus create us and offer us eternal life, He also gives us purpose when we receive Him.

4. Read Ephesians 2:10. The phrase, “created in Christ Jesus” refers to the life we have once we place our faith and trust in Jesus. What does it say about our life now? (We’ve been created in Christ Jesus to do good works that He prepared in advance for us to do! So, if we’re asking the Lord why we’re here, we might as well also ask Him what good works He’d like for us to do in the meantime.)

Challenge
This lesson was pretty deep. We don’t often think about life-and-death issues! What is something that stood out to you or caught your attention in this study? How can we encourage you in your life this week?
