The United States continues to grow ever more secular, according to a new study from the Pew Research Religion & Public Life Project. Nearly one in five of all adults in America are unaffiliated with any religion, an increase of 25 percent in five years.

Leading the way for these so-called “nones” are the Millennials—American adults under the age of 30. Nearly a third of these Millennials have no religious preference.

However, Pew cautions that these non-affiliated people aren’t atheists. Indeed, the rate of self-proclaimed atheists has remained relatively constant (and very low) for the past five years. Together, atheists and agnostics make up 5 percent of the population—a rise of one percentage point since 2007. About two-thirds of these nones believe in God, and about a fifth say they pray every day. (Pew Research Religion & Public Life Project)
