Even when it comes to saying their holy matrimonial vows, many Millennials are opting to do it outside the holy church, according the Public Religion Research Institute. Only about 39 percent of young married folks (ages 18 to 29) say they were married in a church. That’s far fewer than the 65 percent of their grandparents who said they were married at church, and 37 percent of Millennials say they were married by a non-religious officiant such as a justice-of-the-peace or a close friend. The Institute says the reason for the decline in church-based weddings is three-fold: the rise in interreligious marriages, the rise in Millennials being less religious as a whole and the rising cost of weddings.
