The Best of Try This One, for Youth Ministry
By Tony Myles

Group Publishing, 2006, 120 pp., $15.99, www.group.com

As many youth ministry workers rightfully rethink the emerging theology of student ministry, The Best of Try This One reminds us to have fun while creatively investing in teenagers’ lives. The book compiles two decades of practical ideas from Group magazine’s “Try This One,” a regular section of practical ideas sent in by people in the trenches. These republished offerings are rounded out by distinctive chapters on “Helpful Hints” and “Outreach Programs,” providing fresh perspective to both rookies and veterans alike.

Some of the submissions require a small budget, while others are simple and free. A few pop culture references are dated, but the ideas themselves transcend any potential liability. While these ideas are individually downloadable on Group’s Web site, this compilation is a solid resource. Its quick references will help save the day for the professional while also providing hands-on resources for adult volunteers or student leaders looking to take on more ownership.
