The author of Sex Matters, Jonathan McKee, has written extensively for the adolescent and young adult as his core demographic. His written works include Get Your Teenager Talking, More than Just the Talk and The Zombie Apocalypse Guide for Teenagers. He has more than 20 years of experience working in the field of youth ministry, and provides resources and free stuff to parents through his website at TheSource4Parents.com. I mention his background because he is committed to helping ministry leaders and teens walk it out well.

In his current work, McKee directs his attention to the adolescent community with a lighthearted yet straightforward book about sex. He successfully blends story, statistics and Scripture in what proves to be a positive reading experience. After receiving some feedback on his earlier book More than Just the Talk, McKee provides a tool that ministry leaders and parents could offer their teens, which could generate a discussion regarding sex. His two books More than Just the Talk and Sex Matters can be paired as companion books for a study with leaders or parents and students. At the end of each chapter are questions for personal reflection or group discussion.

At the conclusion of the book, the author includes a chapter called “Tough Questions.” He poses 20 questions that allow him to shape how he wants to answer something directly, albeit carefully, thoughtfully and creatively. Here are a few examples:
• Is it wrong to lie in bed but not have sex with your significant other?
• Is it OK to send each other sexy pictures on our phones?
• Is premarital oral sex wrong?
• Is it wrong if I am attracted to someone of the same sex?
• I’ve already had sex, so why bother to save myself anymore?

McKee finishes his book with an encouraging word to teens. That encouragement is the same as what it always has been: Wait until marriage to engage in any type of sexual activity:

“The answer is simply discipline. Your discipline now is a gift to your future spouse. All you are doing is trading a few years of discipline for a lifetime of awesome connecting in ways you probably can’t even imagine yet.”

In his book, McKee makes it clear that he has a love and compassion for the adolescent young woman and young man. Perhaps Sex Matters and some good discussion will make a difference in the lives of the adolescents you know!
