Tez Brooks has experienced the pain of divorce from a wife who had no desire for reconciliation. Therefore, he wrote The Single Dad Detour to share some life experiences post-divorce and to encourage other single dads to trust in the Lord. Through this book, it is Brooks’ prayer that single fathers “will feel the weight of single fatherhood lifted by the grace of God…”

Brooks writes from experience when he talks about the pain of divorce, seeing his ex-wife kiss another man, no longer feeling desirable to other women, and trying to stay involved in his kids’ lives. He shares a lot of biblical wisdom about what it means to forgive, depend on the Lord, and how to model what it means to be a disciple of Christ to your kids. Brooks also discusses a lot of practical wisdom for single dads. For example, he talks about caring for your body physically, making your new home comfortable for your kids, not sulking on Father’s Day, and learning how to cook. Each chapter concludes with reflective questions, Scripture, a new challenge, and a prayer. Also, within the chapters you can find QR codes that you can scan with your smartphone to receive extra content.

The Single Dad Detour would be incredibly beneficial to any single dad who is struggling post-divorce. It also could be greatly utilized by pastors and counselors to take a peek into the struggles of being a single father. Brooks held a nice balance of sharing practical advice from real experiences and biblical wisdom. This balance will make his book easily relatable to any man.
