Against the Tide

Miroslav Volf

William B. Eerdmans Publishing, 2010, 211 pp., $18.00, Eerdmans.com

Too often, I fear today's church cannot comprehend what it means to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." Miroslav Volf, the Henry B. Wright Professor of Systematic Theology at Yale Divinity School, brings the concept of love to the forefront of our everyday lives. His latest book Against the Tide is "a compelling summons to active Christian love in a culture stripped of grace."  He places focus on our relationships with God, our family, the church and culture.

Although Volf uses a short essay format, his detailed scholarly way of writing may disinterest the average reader. His love for history and theology is portrayed clearly throughout the entire book. Against the Tide challenges the reader to go from pettiness and selfishness toward the hope and reconciliation of a deep understanding of the Christian faith.
