  • Got Heroes? Staffing to Save the World
    Paul Turner
It’s almost Go time. Your cast begins to assemble. On cue, the theme music blares as Gary the Game Guy enters with gadgets and gear to take on the fiercest junior high student. Striding behind him is Emily...
  • Identifying Intergenerational Leaders
Many times when intergenerational youth ministry is considered, what we really are asking is, Where can I get some adults to run small groups, teach a particular class, etc? We need to make this as relatively easy as possible. Not everyone is cut out for teaching, though they can be trained. The teaching/mentoring/discipleship role is typically a paramount need. Here is what not to do. Don’t advertise. Putting an ad on your Web site or in church bulletin is not the best idea. Instead, identify potential intergenerational volunteers. Pray for wisdom and discernment, and don’t go it alone. Lean on Holy Spirit guidance and spiritual advisors. Here are my suggestions as to what kind of person to look for:
  • Transcending 'Young' and 'Old': Intergenerational Youth Ministry & the Solution to Volunteers
    Dr. Steve Vandegriff
OK. “Intergenerational youth ministry” may sound like an oxymoron, but think about it. What can be more normal than other generations being a part of ministry to young people / teenagers / students / adolescents...
  • Thou Shalt Care: The XI Commandments of Showing You Care about Volunteers
    Danette Matty
We all know friends, pets and even houseplants need care, but what about volunteers? Here, a veteran youth ministry worker provides a short list of ways you can express your care for your volunteers. Commandment #1: Challenge me spiritually, not only as a leader.
  • Hello & Goodbye: How to Enlist & Disengage Volunteers
    Dr. Allen Jackson
Not too long ago, I was flipping through the cable channel guide and found two movies playing on different channels. One was 50 First Dates and the other, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It struck me funny...
  • Tapping into Retiring Boomer Professionals
To put it mildly, the retiring professionals of today aren’t fulfilling Beatle Paul McCartney’s picture of the 64-year-old. We’re a different kind of graying generation. Walk by any clubhouse of an “active adult living community,” and you’ll find Sinatra is out. You’ll hear music by the Eagles and Sting. We’re not your father’s grandfather.
