Are secular colleges liberal? Well, yes, often they are. Are most nurses female? Yes. Now, a new study shows that what we do with colleges and careers such as nursing is typecasting, and typecasting may prevent kids from pursuing challenging degrees or careers.

New York Times writer Patricia Cohen looks at a new study called “Why Are Professors Liberal?” Here’s part of what she found:

“The overwhelmingly liberal tilt of university professors has been explained by everything from outright bias to higher I.Q. scores. Now new research suggests that critics may have been asking the wrong question. Instead of looking at why most professors are liberal, they should ask why so many liberals—and why so few conservatives—want to be professors.”

Cohen’s article ends with this quote from one of the study’s authors: “The irony is that the more conservatives complain about academia’s liberalism, the more likely it’s going to remain a bastion of liberalism.”
