Pop culture gets the theological thrice-over in these new books. Bruce Springsteen has sold more than 50 million albums since 1973. Now Jeffrey Symynkywicz, Minister at First Parish Universalist Church in Stoughton, Mass., examines The Boss’ “defiantly hopeful” message in the latest addition to the popular Gospel According to … series.
  • A Substantial Summer
    Craig Detweiler
Summer is a season of kicking back and enjoying the sun and the sand. So how should teens pass the lazy days of summer? Some youth workers may seek an alternative to mindless popcorn films. Smaller, independent...

Movies may have been my first love, but as I emerged from Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull, I was catapulted toward a different kind of obsession. Robert DeNiro’s haunting portrait of boxing champ Jake LaMotta left me beaten and bruised. I watched as Jake destroyed his relationships with his brother, his wife and his fans. Jake ends up alone, in jail, literally banging his head against the wall, crying, “Why? Why? Why?” As the film ended, Scorsese offered a curious counterpoint. The credits read, “All I know is this, once I was blind, but now I can see.” I recognized the blindness in Jake and me, but I wondered, “What did it mean to see?” A violent, profane R-rated movie had sparked a spiritual search. Film forged theology.

Elnura, a former Muslim, lives and works in Kygyzstan. Lena, a young woman who stood on the sidelines and watched her Christian friends for most of her time in college, is now back in Kazakhstan attending a local church. Ramona, a vivacious believer from Romania, is in graduate school in the States. Lulieta, an Albanian from a Muslim background, works for a Christian group, ministering to international students. Anatole, a Moldovan from an unchurched background, is pastor of a small church in Bulgaria. What’s their connection? All these intelligent and hard-working women were part of our ministry at a small university in Eastern Europe.

  • The World, The Word & Identity
The single most important issue we must address in youth ministry is identity formation. The reason? It’s the single most important issue in a teenager’s life. The place they land now, in terms of their understanding of themselves, will determine who they are for the rest of their lives. Every teenager chooses to find identity in something and it’s not just teenagers—it’s the most important issue for all of us.
