Taxing the Tube

Outdoor advocates are pushing New Mexico lawmakers to levy a tax on TVs and video games. They say such a bill would encourage the state’s youngsters to play outside. The 1 percent tax, dubbed the “No Child Left Inside Fund,” would funnel money to outdoor education.

The proposed tax has, naturally, stirred a great deal of debate, particularly among gamers, who expressed their displeasure between marathon World of Warcraft sessions.

“If you take a kid who’s just playing his X-Box, or whatever, outside and make him play baseball, he’s going to hate it,” says Dave Gillian, co-owner of the video-game store Gamers Anonymous. “There’s nothing wrong with sitting at home playing games. Everybody’s doing it now.” (Associated Press)
