The newest pick-me-up for teen girls? Breast augmentation. Cosmetic surgeons are reporting they’re seeing more girls ages 18-21 ask for larger breasts. Such surgeries can cost anywhere from $6,000 to $15,000, and some girls save for years to pay for the operation. Others, however, are “given” the operation for graduation or, in extreme cases, for particularly good grades.
“Eighteen is the age where you’re allowed to make every other decision,” said Rachel, an 18-year-old New Yorker who made an appointment with a prominent cosmetic surgeon. “You can smoke, go into the Army, you can get a tattoo—that’s a body modification. This is just a little more extreme.”
