Cutting Down on the Bubbly
By Paul Asay

High-calorie soft drinks are an endangered species in American high schools, according to a recent industry report. Part of this is because some schools have banned sodas from their halls, but soft-drink makers themselves also are emphasizing healthier drinks in schools.

According to the report, non-diet soda accounted for 32 percent of the drinks sold at high schools during the 2006–2007 school year–down 15 percent from just three years earlier. Moreover, the sodas shipped to schools have 40 percent total fewer calories than they had in 2003-2004.

During that same three-year time frame, sales of bottled water floated up 22.8 percent, much to the chagrin of school water fountains everywhere. (Associated Press)
