What Mattered in 2007?

A lot of things happened in 2007, but what really mattered?

Taking a final look back at the year, here are three Top Ten lists created by Religion Newswriters Association, Christianity Today, and Charisma.

One issue that appreared on all the Top Ten lists was politics, as Christians debated whether they could vote for a Mormon nd Democrats increased their efforts to woo religious voters.

Money Matters

Economic jitters have been in the news and may influence the 2008 presidential race. At the same time, many people are dealing with credit card debt, some of it caused by Christmas spending sprees.

So isn't a good thing that the January/February issue of YouthWorker Journal deals with MONEY? We talked to youth workers, financial experts, theologians, and an expert on St. Francis of Assisi to provide you with half a dozen solid articles for you and your kids, plus a look at resources you can use to teach about money.

Veracity Video Vignettes, Volumes 1 and 2

Abingdon Youth, DVD, 2007, $30.00

www.abingdonpress.com

The January/February issue of YouthWorker Journal contains recommendations and reviews of 96 (count 'em!) new books, curricula, videos, and CDs. Here's a look at two new DVDs for youth groups.

Featuring five video clips that vary between 3 and 6 minutes each, The Veracity Video Vignettes series is accompanied by a 16-page guide that gives Scripture references and a general place to take a discussion.

Volume 1 has two clips that are well done and thought-provoking; the other three appeared thrown in for good measure. Volume 2 made me wonder if they had been created by the same company, or hired out to whomever so another volume could be released. Some clips appeared very "80s" in their presentation. I'd feel a little embarrassed at showing some of the clips because of how "out-of-touch" with the current teen culture they would make me appear.

The guidebook is handy if you have no time at all to prepare and want an "instant lesson." However, my students would see right through it. Also, the price tag is high for 20 minutes (at most) of clips.

Youthworkers need ideas that work. If you've got ideas to share, post them in the Idea Exhchange so other ministry leaders can learn from you (click on link). Your community needs you!

1) What special programs / projects do you do during the holidays?

2) What have been your group's top three success outreach initiatives?

3) What has been your group's most popular inreach ideas, and why?

4) What is the most effective means your group uses to promote authenticity?

5) How have you found pop culture to be a springboard for spiritual lessons?

The YouthWorker eJournal Survey: What Qualities Will Matter in 2008?

OK. We reviewed what happened in 2007. Looking forward to 2008, we want to ask you about leadership.

The presidential candidates have been campaigning for months. Using some of their campaign slogans, what is it that you are looking for in national and religious leaders today?

What do leaders need today to take us into the future? Choose the word below that you think is most important, and we'll report back to you next time.

I think leaders should embody:

Change

Experience

Character

Values

The YouthWorker eJournal Survey Results: Is the Glass Half Full or Half Empty?

Another year is ending, and the next year is set to begin. As you step back and take a look at things, do you think they're getting better or worse?

It's an easy question to ask, but harder to answer. We want to know whether you are basically upbeat or downbeat about the future prospects for our culture, the church, and the state of youth ministry.

Basically, I think things are getting worse.
