Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.”

That passage of scripture took on new meaning for me last night because a thief really did try to break into our house and steal our stuff. We were lying in bed reading when we hear a strange sound at the front of our house (which turned out to be someone tearing up a screen on our front window). Then we heard someone in our back yard removing the cover to the crawl space under our house. That’s when I did something not so smart; I grabbed a sword (yes, I have a real sword…long story) and headed outside. Like I said, not the smartest move. As I head into the backyard, a car out front peeled out and sped away. Later, when the police arrived, they said to make sure we had anything of value put away. It was at that moment that I realized that all my stuff wasn’t really all that important to me. I realized I wasn’t upset because someone wanted to steal my stuff, but I was upset because my family was home and could have potentially been in danger. I treasure my wife, and I treasure my daughters. The rest of the stuff is just junk that isn’t eternal. In any event, I found out what I really valued last night, and I was also reminded how nice it will be someday to live somewhere where thieves aren’t trying to break-in. It made me glad that things I really value are eternal, stored in heaven, and totally secure. So I guess you could say our attempted break-in was good news, but I still would have rather learned the lesson some other way.
